117 minutes of Badassery, YTT10

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Yes, badassery is a word. Or at least it should be.

We’re straying from sports today because:

  1. I’m sure you’ve seen all you can see of the Gators pwning the Buckeyesagain.
  2. I’m still annoyed at Selig over this MLB Extra Innings garbage.
  3. I’m still raving about 300, which I finally saw this weekend.

If you haven’t seen it yet, turn off your computer and go to a movie theater right now.

We’re friends, right? Well let me be honest. Gratuitous gore isn’t my bag, baby. I thought Sin City was visually stunning, but I found myself too distracted by the blood spurts and the fingers being eaten off to enjoy it. And Elijah Wood? Creepy. Elijah Wood as some weird, flesh-eating, super attacker guy? Even worse. But 300 handled it really well. When it was war time, it was war time. Sure there was lots of blood, but you always saw it coming. And somehow the constant slow-motion during the battle scenes made me want to watch it even more.

But if you haven’t seen it yet, let me warn you of one thing: when you walk out of the movie theater you’re going to feel pretty darn invincible. I don’t see stabbing elephants anywhere on my calendar, but I found myself strangely fired up to go home and crank out some new features. Personally, it’s hard not to find parallels with 300’s story line as I watch the big Sports Web 2.0 players either raising millions or being bought out for millions. The only question is, three months into this crazy project, will RUWT? and 300 remain parallel or is there an alternate ending?

Enjoy the trailer.

Comcast and RUWT? team up

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

“Comcast and RUWT? sitting in a tree. S-T-R-E-A-M-I-N-G…”

I am psyched to announce that Comcast and RUWT? are teaming up for the homestretch of the NHL season to get Hockey fans more great games. Comcast’s Hockey Live service is streaming a bunch of great matchups in the final couple weeks, and we’ll be integrating their broadcasts into the site.

Find a game on the site sporting a Red Light, and it’s available for streaming for free online. RUWTbot will be watching too, and will add these online games to the list of games you can get an alert for. For more info, check out the official page at areyouwatchingthis.com/hockeylive.

Soooooo Padre.

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

So…there are some issues with the Twitter shtuff. The messages for some of the bots are getting jumbled around, so you might see some NBA messages on the NCAAB stream and whatnot. I’ll get on it as soon as I’m back from South Padre.

Yes, that South Padre. I’m taking a weekend off because, well, I needed to get out of town and unwind for a few days. First 24 hours? Mission accomplished. We ended the night last night a a bar with the official Vanilla Ice after-show party (he’s still touring? maybe it was an after-career party?) with the man himself pouring shots of Jaeger directly into peoples mouths, Cyrus from Real World Boston running around for Kush.tv, and the Girls Gone Wild crew filming an “episode”. Yes, that Girls Gone Wild. and no, you’re not getting a link.

So hang tight. Drink a beer. Watch some basketball. Twitter fixes and my witty bleacher comments will be back Sunday night.

You’re Such a Twit

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

And I mean that in the most loving way possible.

After watching Twitter go supernova in front of our very eyes last week at SXSW/i, RUWT? is wholeheartedly jumping on the bandwagon.

Starting today, keep an eye on exciting games in three different sports (with more to come): twitter.com/RUWTnba, twitter.com/RUWTncaab, and twitter.com/RUWTnhl.

You can also follow our blog posts at twitter.com/RUWT.

YouTube Tuesday 8, and Hockey News

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

We’re going back to the NHL for this week’s YouTube Tuesday clip. Basketball is easily my favorite sport to play (hear me out…), and have been playing it since HS. I got a bit of a late start (especially for Brooklyn), but I love it and can hold my own. I have the skills of a 3 or a 4 in the body of a 2, so I’m always trying to work on my handle, but there are many things I just don’t think I’ll ever be able to do on the court. Like dunk. Or a jump stop. You need a good amount of genetic talent to be able to dunk, so pulling off a jump stop always seemed easier to attain. Just takes practice right?

And then I saw this clip from Friday’s Canadiens v. Penguins game, where Sidney Crosby pulls off a jump stop…on ice! Through 4 defenders! I don’t know if I’m now more encouraged, or less.

Hockey fans, we have some cool news coming later this week. Stay tuned.

Geek Chic

More from the folks over at SMITH Magazine, a photoset of geeky t-shirts from SXSW (via). Who knew that a $5 Old Navy shirt, $3 of fuzzy lettering at Hobby Lobby (question marks cost extra…), and some quality time with my oft-ignored iron, could sneak my ugly mug onto the list?

We Have March Madness Videos!

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

The NHL finally has some company. CBS has decided to post great plays during games, and a game recap once it’s finished, for all 64 games of March Madness. Did you see the Vandy player hitting a shot from his knees? Did you miss Player of the Year Durant’s quiet 27 and 8? Or maybe you’re a Duke-hater and want to relive the silky smooth jumper that took VCU to the second round? Simply click on any game to view the clips courtesy of CBS, or if you can’t decide what to watch, just check out our Latest Videos page.

If you want to catch March Madness live you can head over to CBS’s March Madness on Demand, but what if you’re using a computer MMOD doesn’t support? I’m looking at you Mac and Linux users… Inspired by a computer science student at Columbia (via), we were able to strip out all the extra stuff and give you the direct link to the stream. Enjoy.

Keeping it Niche

Friday, March 16th, 2007

RUWT? got some great pub over at SMITH Magazine. Who would’ve thought wearing a homemade RUWT? T-shirt could get you a sweet writeup?

RUWT is like SportsCenter meets ESPN.com meets Digg—in other words, a great mashup of some of the best in new tech tools in this Web 2.0 world. And if you don’t care about everything in that previous sentence, think of RUWT this way: sports junkie paradise. more…

My Head Hurts, YTT 7

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

RUWT?blog has been pretty quiet for the past few days. I decided to spend less time on SXSW/i panels this year and more on socializing and networking. I figured the only way to do it right was to jump in head first and now…well…my head hurts.

The craziness has included:

I’m gonna need a few days to recover and thankfully we have a short lull before the Madness begins on Thursday. YTT this week is a One Shining Moment appetizer…

YouTube Tuesday VI

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Just three days until the geek mecca that is SXSW/i descends on us here in Austin, and I’m running around like a madman trying to get everything done. This week has been full of trips to Hobby Lobby for shwag materials, new features for the site, and now a sprint down to Kinko’s to take care of business cards.

But it’s Tuesday, and all things must momentarily pause to show respect to the YTT tradition. This week we pluck this hilarious video from the NBA’s channel on YouTube. They haven’t gone as far as the NHL has with their video selection, but it’s a start.
