Ryan Gomes? Sign me up! YTT21

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Every year the NBA runs a Summer League for rookies, rehabbing pros, and wild cards looking for a roster spot. Usually the best players they have to market are of the Randy Foye and Ryan Gomes ilk, but this year there’ll be some interesting participants…like China. And even larger, Oden and Durant.

The full schedule sports 50+ games, and although it’ll be good to see the Memphis versus China rivalry renewed this week, the one to circle on the calendar is Portland playing Seattle next Friday. All of the games are available via NBA webcast, and some of them will be broadcast on NBA TV. I know it’s been a while since we’ve seen guys like Durant actually playing a game, so if you can’t wait, here’s a fun highlight reel of Baby KG.

Go there. No, no, no! Go there!

It has been all about KG on sports news today. Minnesota is willing to let the Big Ticket go, and the only question is where he’s going to end up. I died a bit inside when I heard that the Lakers were the leading candidates, and I’d have no choice but to root for Kobe cause I want to see KG get a ring, but that four-team monstrosity of a trade fell through. Now the word on the street has him going to the Suns for (essentially) Shawn Marion, which would be a steal. Can you imagine a fast break with Steve Nash choosing between Amare and KG? Just sick.

YTT this week is an oldie but goodie from the KG scrapbook. If we’re lucky, we’ll see the final matchup in the Western Conference Finals next year.

Psst. Hey America. Remember me?

Things have been pretty quiet on the blog lately. RUWTbot suggested I take some time off, once again proving that he’s the smartest robot alive. The FOOA conference in New York was solid, but with all the running around, and the army of kids surrounding me on the packed flight home, I’ve been a bit worse for wear and battling a nasty cough.

The usual well of wit that showered this blog was pretty dry, but site work has chugged along including new WYG stats on the user leaderboard and on user pages, and the addition of YES Network to our library of game videos. If you’re favorite team has recaps posted on YouTube, let me know and I’ll get it added.

As a thanks to RUWTbot for the forced time off, YTT19 this week is one of his favorite songs.

Catch Your Breath for YTT18

Wow, what a sports week. We had Billy leaving the two-time national champions to go to Orlando (and then not), every single male American tennis player getting bounced in the first round of the French Open possibly the best manager meltdown in the history of sport, and of course Lebron going aboslutely nuts in his coming out party.

The one story that has gone somewhat under the radar though, is the record breaking performance by Joe Chestnut. I’ve never seen anyone come close to matching the eating skills of Kobayashi, but Chestnut demolished his hot dog eating record by a full 6 dogs. 6 hot dogs, people! That should be a full meal! When you’re starving!

YTT this week is short-lived 2003 FOX show, Man vs. Beast. Analysis of bear’s performance by commentators? Classic.

The UFL. No, Really. YTT17.

Hey folks, hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend. You’ll notice that this week’s YouTube Tuesday is actually happening on Wednesday. Crying foul? Well, go back to the first sentence. It was Memorial Day. And just like garbage pickup, everything shifts a day. Don’t buy that excuse? Well you obviously hate America.

This week’s video was an easy choice after hearing about the United Football League. That’s right folks, Bill Hambrecht, a “rich old Wall Street guy” is teaming up with rebel Mark Cuban (eyeing the Vegas franchise) to start a new football league directly opposing the NFL. They’re aiming to kick off in August 2008, and the plan is to televise games on Friday nights, targeting cities currently without a pro team—all they need is 7 more billionaires to hop on board. The NFL has swatted off four competitors and it’s hard to imagine this crew breaking through, but if I get to watch a pro game in Vegas or we get even one “He Hate Me“, it’ll probably be worth it.

Tainted, YTT16

taint

  1. To affect with or as if with a disease.
  2. To affect with decay or putrefaction; spoil. See synonyms at contaminate.
  3. To corrupt morally.
  4. To affect with a tinge of something reprehensible.

The word taint seems to be everywhere in sports these days. You have players saying that Bonds’ run at Aaron is tainted, the ridiculous blackmail and child abuse soap opera that is the Landis trial, and even ESPN, that bastion of sports news, is raising eyebrows over how they try and win scoops.

sigh.

So for today’s YouTube Tuesday, we’re going old school. We’re going pure. We’re going 8-bit. (via)

Stern is at it again, YTT15

Well it’s official. The NBA has come down hard (and how!) suspending Horry, Stoudemire, and Diaw. Horry gets two games, but that might be all that’s left in the series.

Just the thought of a Spurs v. Utah Western Conference Final, and then probably a Spurs v. Pistons Finals just pisses me off. How could Baron Davis’ forearm shiver just get him a fine, but Diaw taking a few steps off the bench and turning around by himself warrant a suspension? How about some consistency beyond just blindly following these arcane rules? More than anything I wanted to see the Suns tangle with the Warriors, each team putting up a buck and a half each night, but it looks like that’s not going to happen. Big Shot Bob has come up big in the final seconds of a game again. This time though, it might be his shoulder that wins him the series.

Cue the conspiracy theorists. Here’s a clip (via) of Duncan leaving the bench after a hard foul earlier in the same game.

Breaking news: Nash had a big cut on his nose on Sunday. You didn’t hear? Really? Yeah, SportsCenter hasn’t really mentioned it at all. I missed it ’cause I was travelling. Since I’m sure you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a montage in all it’s bloody glory.

Warriors…Come Out To Plaaaaaaaay…

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

I don’t know about you, but my heroes come from Coney Island.

I waited for days to use “Come Out To Play” for a headline on RUWT? after a Golden State game. The line is pure gold, I thought. Wittiest man ever.

Except for the part where none of my friends have even heard of The Warriors. Rubbish. The movie is a classic! Rockstar (of Grand Theft Auto fame) even made a Warriors video game! Check this choice clip for YTT 13, and if you want more check out the trailer too. I’m going on a forced vacation tomorrow—I gotta go pack.

YouTube Tuesday Twelve

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

There are a lot of “T”s in that title, so it’s probably a good time for a YouTube Tuesday Two-fer.

With a tip of the cap to my love for advertising, here is a pair of two great Gatorade commercials. Instead of bastardizing classics, agencies should be giving us more like these. Fittingly, both spots are featuring players that need to start shouldering more of the load. Quick.
