Burstin’ at the seams

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

When people ask how long the site has been up for, I usually count from the date TechCrunch wrote a story on RUWT?. The IM conversation between the Chairman and I when the users started flooding in and I realized they wrote about the site is pretty freakin’ hilarious.

Fast forward eight months, and we have gotten into a tiff with the NHL, caught countless classics, stumbled through a radio interview, and just yesterday blew through the 2,000 user barrier. It’s amazing how quickly my priorities can shift from just trying to get someone (anyone!) to write about me, to obsessing about how to send out hundreds of alerts just a few seconds faster…

I never would have made it this far without you guys, and I want to take a second to shout a big Thanks to everyone who has joined in the fun. Hopefully RUWTbot and I can keep doing this for a long, long time.

Check back in tomorrow. Big news for our neighbors to the North.

Wet my pants?

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Really? Did I just say “wet my pants” on the radio?

Wow.

Well, one on-air radio interview down, hopefully many more to come. The first of anything is always so-so right? Right? Of course. This marathon trip to NYC is almost done—I’ll be back in Austin (and site stuff back to normal) by the weekend.

wet my pants. heh.

Is this month done yet? I knew September was going to be a crazy month, but I didn’t expect this. I’ve been in New York for the past week (totally unplanned), and this morning I’ll be on Buffalo’s WGR 550 Sports Radio sometime between 9a and 10a Eastern. Yeah, I know that makes no sense.

More details to come.

update: the time is confirmed now—i’ll be on-air at 9:30a et.

update: john came through and we now have audio of the interview!

So close. Soooooo close.

The NHL preseason started last week (can you believe it?!?), and I’m already seeing an uptick from our puck-loving neighbors to the North. RUWTbot had hoped to launch his invasion of Canada on Labor Day, but there were delays from my TV Listings dealer provider. The updated ETA from my pusher provider was today, so I’m pinging the crap out of the FTP server, looking for postal codes with six characters (crazy!).

Stay tuned.

ROI Analysis of Fuzzy, Iron-On Lettering

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

A couple months ago it was a homemade t-shirt that got RUWT? an article in ESPN the Magazine. Today, it’s a blog comment that gets an article on da’ Fool.

I need to start playing the Lotto.

One reader’s response to my article earlier this week about a NewTeeVee.com article on ways to kick things up a notch over at TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) is too good not to elaborate on.

“I’m shamefully biased, but I laugh every time I see the sports version of the My Tivo Gets Me ad,” Mark writes at the tail end of the user comments on the NewTeeVee story.

“If my Tivo really got me, it would start recording anytime the Yankees went into extra innings, a ranked college football team was about to be upset, or there was a pitcher with a no-hitter through 7.” (more)

Websites are lame.

Why open your browser when you can get the awesome power of RUWTbot on your Mac or Windows desktop?

Yeah, I couldn’t think of a reason either.

How not to die

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Yes, this is blog is mostly about sports, but it’s also about running a startup. Quitting my job and trying to build something useful from scratch from the desk in my bedroom has easily been one of the most memorable experiences of my life—some days are awesome, yet some are just crushing. The constant, lingering question though is, will we make it? Paul Graham has an awesome post on that today, and if you’re currently in a startup (or considering joining/starting one), you definitely need to give this a read.

When startups die, the official cause of death is always either running out of money or a critical founder bailing. Often the two occur simultaneously. But I think the underlying cause is usually that they’ve become demoralized. You rarely hear of a startup that’s working around the clock doing deals and pumping out new features, and dies because they can’t pay their bills and their ISP unplugs their server.

Startups rarely die in mid keystroke. So keep typing!

Keep typing indeed. The RUWT? Sports Desktop Widget launches next week. Drop me a line if you’d like to join the beta test.

Sophomore Slump

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

I hosted the draft party for my Fantasy Football league last night. Got pick #2 and I’m pretty happy with my team, despite some hiccups in ESPN’s draft application that almost screwed me over. Palmer, Steven Jackson, and Reggie Wayne are the headliners as I try not to overthink things in my second year doing fantasy. My future productivity just plummeted.

How are your drafts going?

We’re Done with August! Everything’s Great! Except…

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Okay folks, I have some good news and some bad news. Good news first, cause that’s how I roll.

College Football starts this weekend. That’s right. We’re done with the dog (ahem) days of summer, pretty much the worst time of year for sports. JCMJ sums it up gloriously:

But the long wait is over now. Pretty much every weekend is covered through February thanks to football and college basketball, and that February pause is only a minor speed bump to the glory of March Madness. The days of trying to choose between the MLS and Pro Volleyball are behind you. more…

Now for some bad news. I got a message this morning from my TV listings provider saying that getting me Canadian TV listings isn’t a matter of just flipping a switch. My rep is apologetic and is hustling to get the data to me as soon as possible, but RUWTbot might be delaying his invasion for a week or so. I’ll let you know as soon as I know more. Lame.

Blogglenecked!

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Has it really been over a month since I’ve posted? Frick on a stick!

I qualified for this weeks ago, but this blog is offifically blogglenecked. I coined the term back in ’03 when blogging was oh so cool. It’s a verb and defined as:

To reduce postings to a blog due to some sort of blockage. Often due to a really good post that has yet to be written.

Pretty accurate. Even my awe-inspiring wit couldn’t find something interesting to say (or that hadn’t been said already) as Barry did his thing, Vick did his thing, the Yankees did their thing, and the dog days of summer dragged on.

Time for the good news. September brings penant races, the NFL, College Football, and my birthday, but you guys are getting all the presents. There have been a ton of tweaks to the site to make things run smoother including an overdue redesign of the alerts page. In just over a week, RUWTbot will be invading Canada to continue his world domination, and (shhh) a RUWT? Sports desktop widget is currently in Alpha testing.

Things have been silent on the blog, but don’t worry, I’m still slinging electrons around like it’s my job. Oh right. It is my job.
