Ryan Gomes? Sign me up! YTT21

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Every year the NBA runs a Summer League for rookies, rehabbing pros, and wild cards looking for a roster spot. Usually the best players they have to market are of the Randy Foye and Ryan Gomes ilk, but this year there’ll be some interesting participants…like China. And even larger, Oden and Durant.

The full schedule sports 50+ games, and although it’ll be good to see the Memphis versus China rivalry renewed this week, the one to circle on the calendar is Portland playing Seattle next Friday. All of the games are available via NBA webcast, and some of them will be broadcast on NBA TV. I know it’s been a while since we’ve seen guys like Durant actually playing a game, so if you can’t wait, here’s a fun highlight reel of Baby KG.

Setting a bad example for Marks everywhere

Friday, June 29th, 2007

If he was a Marc and not a Mark, I might be able to let this one slide, but this is just ridiculous.

Don Nelson’s attorney, John O’Connor, who said Cuban is suing Nelson, claiming the Warriors beat the Mavs in the first round because the Warriors’ coach — and former coach of the Mavs — had “confidential information and he [Cuban] wants to enjoin Don from coaching against the Mavericks.”

“There is no basis in our view,” O’Connor said. “I suppose he [Nelson] knows [Dirk] Nowitzki likes to go right instead of left, but normally that’s not a trade secret.” (via)

Go there. No, no, no! Go there!

It has been all about KG on sports news today. Minnesota is willing to let the Big Ticket go, and the only question is where he’s going to end up. I died a bit inside when I heard that the Lakers were the leading candidates, and I’d have no choice but to root for Kobe cause I want to see KG get a ring, but that four-team monstrosity of a trade fell through. Now the word on the street has him going to the Suns for (essentially) Shawn Marion, which would be a steal. Can you imagine a fast break with Steve Nash choosing between Amare and KG? Just sick.

YTT this week is an oldie but goodie from the KG scrapbook. If we’re lucky, we’ll see the final matchup in the Western Conference Finals next year.

Stern is at it again, YTT15

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Well it’s official. The NBA has come down hard (and how!) suspending Horry, Stoudemire, and Diaw. Horry gets two games, but that might be all that’s left in the series.

Just the thought of a Spurs v. Utah Western Conference Final, and then probably a Spurs v. Pistons Finals just pisses me off. How could Baron Davis’ forearm shiver just get him a fine, but Diaw taking a few steps off the bench and turning around by himself warrant a suspension? How about some consistency beyond just blindly following these arcane rules? More than anything I wanted to see the Suns tangle with the Warriors, each team putting up a buck and a half each night, but it looks like that’s not going to happen. Big Shot Bob has come up big in the final seconds of a game again. This time though, it might be his shoulder that wins him the series.

Cue the conspiracy theorists. Here’s a clip (via) of Duncan leaving the bench after a hard foul earlier in the same game.

YTT14, We’ve got ourselves a bleeder…

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Breaking news: Nash had a big cut on his nose on Sunday. You didn’t hear? Really? Yeah, SportsCenter hasn’t really mentioned it at all. I missed it ’cause I was travelling. Since I’m sure you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a montage in all it’s bloody glory.

YouTube Tuesday Twelve

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

There are a lot of “T”s in that title, so it’s probably a good time for a YouTube Tuesday Two-fer.

With a tip of the cap to my love for advertising, here is a pair of two great Gatorade commercials. Instead of bastardizing classics, agencies should be giving us more like these. Fittingly, both spots are featuring players that need to start shouldering more of the load. Quick.

Duncan v. Crawford v. Stern, YTT11

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I’m not really sure why seeing Crawford eject Timmy made me so angry on Saturday, but not being able to send the NBA feedback through their website without creating an account pissed me off even more.

I thought Crawford definitely needed to be suspended for a game and kept from officiating any Spurs playoff games, but I was shocked when Stern pimp-slapped Crawford into next season. And to hear Stern say on Pardon the Interruption today that Crawford may never ref in the NBA again? Kinda stunning.

Save Me Ricky Davis!

The Cavs/Nuggets game will be the headline after tonight’s UNC/Clemson tussle, and while I was searching for a good image I found this one. It’s not exactly headline image material, but it’s too good not to share. Official caption below.
